Highways (400, 401, 404, 427): Do they make you scared?

A few reminders before you start your trip on Highways:

  1. If possible, in your first highway experience, try to drive your vehicle during the hours when there is little traffic
  2. Check the route, entrances and exits of the road in advance, by using Google Maps
  3. Learn the meaning of traffic signs thoroughly and follow the directions of these signs in advance. (For example, traffic signs warn you beforehand by showing you the road and lane you will exit with arrows. When you see these signs, prepare upfront to switch to the relevant lane)

Highway

The main mistakes during drive on Highways:

  1. When getting into a highway, observe the speed of the vehicle driving on the left of your car. This action will help you determine at what speed you should enter
  2. The lane you usually enter on the highway will end after a short while. Please check your entry in advance, by using mirror and blind spot checks and make sure it is safe to merge into a left lane before you give signal
  3. Sudden steering, braking and gas movements at speeds of 80 km/h and above on the highway may worry you. Avoid sudden movements as much as possible

Two-lane highway

Some people find it difficult to determine safety distance from the vehicle in front, when changing lanes on highways. It is important to note that, the distance of the vehicle on the right should be checked using the rearview mirror and side mirror.

Guidelines to follow, when switching lanes on Highways:

  • If the vehicle coming from the right lane is seen at the same point in the side mirror and the rearview mirror, it means that our speed is the same as that vehicle. In this case, the distance will be suitable for changing lanes, however it is important to give signal prior to changing lane, to let the driver know you decided to switch a lane.
  • If the vehicle on the right lane is shrinking towards the middle of our mirror, this means that this vehicle is moving at a slower speed than us. Hence, you can change lanes.
  • If the vehicle on the right lane is moving outside our right mirror or is half visible in our mirror, this vehicle is about to reach our blind spot. In this case, do not change lanes!

Traffic jam

Last, but not the least is to follow the directions of the traffic signs for the exit. Avoid making sudden and risky decisions even if you miss the exit. You can simply exit at the next road, what is more important is safety.

Make it a habit to check your mirrors and blind spots with your signal when entering, exiting and changing lanes on the highway. You can overcome your fear with plenty of practice.
